Abhayasekararamaya Temple, Negombo

Affectionately known locally as the Podipansala, (Little Temple), the beautiful Abhayasekararamaya Temple is a peaceful place exuding a sense of history and spirituality.

The gleaming white stupa is the first place to visit before walking through the extensive grounds to the rows of little oil lamps waiting to be lit.

A bit further on is the sacred bo tree which has plenty of space around it to allow people to sit quietly and meditate or join in the chanting on Poya Days.

Nearby is a small Hindu shrine dedicated to Vishnu opposite which is a life size statue of the powerful Sri Lankan deity, Sri Siddha Suniyam seated upon his white horse.

The deity has a dual personality being benevolent on the bright lunar fortnight beginning after a new moon and malevolent on the dark lunar fortnight which begins at the full moon.

The final building you can enter is the Image Room which contains a large seated Buddha with the fingers of the right hand  pointing towards the earth.  This represents the moment of enlightenment.

The entrance is at the end of Temple Road.  It is free to enter and there is plenty of parking space
