Rajapaksa Park Negombo

Rajapaksa Park is a tranquil oasis in Rukmani Devi Mawatha near the hustle and bustle of Negombo town centre

The land was donated by the family of the actress Rukmani Devi, known as ‘the ‘nightingale of Sri Lanka’, after her tragic early death in 1978. A park was created and named Rukmani Devi Park in her memory.

In 2014, the government paid for its renovation, and it was renamed Rajapaksa Park. The municipal council are now responsible for its maintenance.

Informal planting of trees and shrubs has created a haven for wildlife with many species of birds to be seen.  An abundance of cute little palm squirrels play on the grass and chase each other up trees.

A path lined by royal palm trees leads through to the centrepiece of the park, a lily pond with a small Japanese-style gazebo in the centre which can be reached by a bridge on either side.

Sitting sheltered from the noonday sun under the roof I was entertained by the curious terrapins who kept trying to climb onto the lily pads to watch me.

There are two play areas with lots of equipment for younger children, making it a popular place for families.  Schoolchildren love to come here after their lessons to hang out with their classmates.  During holidays and weekends whole families congregate to chatter, picnic, and play with their children.

The small café which provides a hot and cold drinks, and a selection of light snacks has not yet reopened since lockdown but there is a café just outside the gates.

Friendly security staff patrol the park during its open hours, creating a safe environment for all, while gardeners work hard to keep the area clean and tidy.

The Park opens at 8am and is open to visitors until the ticket counter closes at 6pm, allowing an hour until the park closes at 7pm, when visitors are asked to leave.

Some parking spaces are available, but in busy times not enough.

There is an entrance fee of Rs200 for foreigners and Rs50 for locals.
